We forget how soothing it can be to put aside our daily worries and just get busy in the kitchen.
All day I have had an unsettled mind and several nagging concerns. It’s not important to know what they were because each and everyone of us have our own. Big or small.
In all fairness I had had a great coaching session with my own health coach Natalie Bel Hill late in the afternoon and this was enough to get me at least motivated to contemplate cooking dinner. However it was my time in the kitchen that really set me straight.
I buckled down and just started by looking in the fridge to see what I had. I then checked a couple of recipe titles to get a little more inspired. Little did I know that those two actions were enough to get the ball rolling. No sooner had I set to work than I realized I was singing and floating away into a zone. This process very quickly made me forget all about my worries and my strifes. In less than 45 minutes my mood was totally different and I had a wholesome and delicious dish “banged out” and on the table.
My dish was simple. Fresh fish, Parmesan, chives and paprika accompanied with a Farro, spinach and roasted sweet potato side dish.
The sheer process was such a pleasure because it was so easy and didn’t require much thought or planning. The results were incredibly satisfying and immediately my confidence was restored plus I got to extend my experience by sitting down and enjoying the results with my crew.
Since I cook for a living I sometimes overlook the benefits of cooking to restore my own good feelings.
Here are the benefits of cooking that I noted today:
When you enter the kitchen and get focused on something unrelated to your own issues you let your mind rest and this alone can allow the healing process to begin.
When you succeed and produce something to be proud of you get a sense of accomplishment putting you in a much better head space to deal with your other problems.
When you then sit down and enjoy your own creation you feel empowered and powered up because you are nourishing mind, body and spirit simultaneously.
When you share your meal with others all those feel good factors – and this is a proven fact – take you to an even higher plane.
The end result…..
a sense of contentment and a complete dissipation of all current frustrations.
I urge you to consider using the kitchen as a place to heal.
